Cinematic Commons

Across this extraordinary 2020-21, with the theme of ‘Constituents of Affective Publics’, Cinematic Commons studio seeks to depart from the current challenging situation – isolation protocols, domestic implosion and disabled public realms – to probe alternative possibilities of spatial conditions to resist the control, disconnection and dissolution of urban public spaces. Through a series of design workshops, research forensis and episodic multi-media experiments, students are guided to develop their own design briefs and choices of sites that reflect their observations of sporadic, inventive and occasionally precarious acts of ‘apart-together’ occupations. These opportunities are further reinterpreted and expanded into strategies of architectural propositions and new urban infrastructures that foster a sense of vital affinity and collectivity between citizens for an open and resilient city.
